Gleeds in Peru
Gleeds is a proud member of the UK Delivery Team, working in partnership with Mace and Arup in Peru, to rebuild critical infrastructure following the 2017 El Niño devastation.
The Peru regeneration project demonstrates how our industry can create a lasting legacy that changes people's lives in the face of climate change.
The story so far in Peru
In many respects, Peru is an extreme portrait of the world’s battle against climate change. Its Andean peaks bear witness to melting glaciers from rising temperatures. Communities and infrastructure near costal zones face ongoing sea level rise and changing climate conditions which threaten farming practices that have steadily delivered food over the last 1,000 years.
In 2017, these existential threats became very real for Peruvians as El Niño storms damaged much of the vital infrastructure they rely on, including schools and hospitals. Under a government-to-government agreement between the UK and Peru, Gleeds is collaborating with Mace and Arup, as the UK Delivery Team, to repair that damage and build a safer and more resilient future for Peru.
Working with Autoridad para la Reconstrucción con Cambios (ARCC) – a public body appointed to lead reconstruction and climate change mitigation – we are delivering a £3bn programme of 74 schools, 15 new health facilities and integrated flood prevention infrastructure.
This is our story about not just building back what once was, but building a lasting legacy that will change the lives of millions of Peruvians facing the impacts of climate change.
UK selected as Peru’s delivery partner
The Department for International Trade first announced the UK’s selection as Peru’s delivery partner on 22 June 2020.
The International Trade Minister for Exports said:
"I am delighted that the UK has been selected by Peru to support the Reconstruction Programme, following the devastating repercussions of the El Niño phenomenon in 2017.
"This partnership highlights the value UK businesses can bring to other countries and is a great example of UK expertise helping people around the world.
"The Department for International Trade will be working hand in glove with the Peruvian Government to help rebuild and protect these regions for years to come."
Finding my purpose in Peru
George Parsons followed an opportunity to be part of a major infrastructure project in a new country. In his own words, George shares how the experience has changed his perspective on the positive impact of his work in the communities it serves.
"I’ve been honoured to work side-by-side with the local delivery workforce, helping to build a knowledge transfer department imparting the tools and skills they need to stand on their own feet and deliver whatever future programmes they aspire to."
