Decarbonise (embodied carbon calculation)
Decarbonise is currently being offered as a service in India only due to demand and capacity.
Decarbonise is Gleeds' tool for delivering embodied carbon intelligence across the project lifecycle — seamlessly combining cost management and sustainability. Decarbonise allows clients to manage embodied carbon and helps inform decision-making in reducing embodied carbon emissions at the design stages whilst also assessing the cost impact.
Embodied carbon refers to the total greenhouse gas emissions generated to produce a built asset. This includes emissions from extracting raw materials, manufacturing building products, transportation and construction activities.
Unlike operational carbon, which is emitted during the building's use, embodied carbon is locked in at the construction stage and cannot be decarbonised once emitted or the building is constructed.
Understanding and managing these emissions is crucial for a sustainable future in the built environment.
Simple inputs: Decarbonise works with the building component inventory in the form of cost plan, bills of quantities and quantity take-offs. This data is used to quantify the embodied carbon footprint of a building, providing actionable elemental, sub-elemental and material-level insights.
An integrated cost and carbon approach: analysis of material specifications for embodied carbon and assignment of suitable global warming potentials from the Decarbonise environmental product declarations (EPDs) database. This is then compared to material costs, offering insights with potential recommendations to lower the embodied carbon footprint during a project’s design phase.
Bespoke, expert backed insight: Decarbonise has been developed by sustainability experts who curate a global construction material database of EPDs for over 60,000 types of construction materials. Our EPDs are based on industry standards such as ISO 14025 and our workings align with RICS whole life carbon assessment professional statements.
Case study
Grade A Commercial Office – Campus Decarbonise partnered with the cost management team to optimise embodied carbon (Stages A to C) for a Grade A commercial office space in Asia. The aim was to identify the most sustainable options along with cost impacts to meet the client’s embodied carbon targets.
Challenge: provide an embodied carbon and cost estimate on the RIBA Stage 3 design, enabling the design team to quickly review material compositions before initiating the tender process.
Objectives: the goal was to give the client a clear and actionable understanding of the current design's impact on both embodied carbon and cost, facilitating focused discussions and collaboration to reduce the embodied carbon footprint.
Solution: we prepared a detailed lifecycle of embodied carbon estimates for Stages A to C using our curated EPD database, providing a top ten list of materials with potential recommendations highlighting opportunities for embodied carbon reduction, with significant cost savings for the design team to consider.
Outcome: the building has the potential to reduce up to 19.5% of upfront embodied carbon in Stage A, resulting in a substantial saving of approximately 14,784 tonnes of carbon. The corresponding cost impact ranges from a decrease of 1.55% to an increase of 0.85%.
Our experts are ready to help you learn more about Decarbonise and how to effectively reduce embodied carbon on your projects.
