Materiality and boundaries
In 2020 the ESG Steering Group and Consultation Group undertook a materiality assessment, scoring GRI topics from internal, external, local and global perspectives. Part of the process included a benchmarking exercise and training to provide a working knowledge of global reporting, GRI and the UN SDGs. We scored the topics by the level of importance and impact; prioritizing into three groups:
- drive
- manage
- monitor
For the first year, we are reporting on our approach to the priority topics i.e., those we will “drive”. For several of the “manage” topics, we already have processes in place, or they are topics which we will address in 2022. There are a few topics we have determined as areas we will “monitor” – and will establish if these are material to the global business at a future point in time.
In terms of boundaries, our commitment is to global reporting. However, as our first GRI report, we acknowledge that we can improve the data collection from our global network of offices. Our aim is to continue to refine our materiality process and seek further external and global input.
