CEO’s Welcome
Our purpose is to shape the future of the built environment with an ethical, sustainable and socially-conscious mindset.
2020 proved to be a year unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic brought ESG considerations to the fore, highlighting the important role that businesses play – whether from a social, health, economic or environmental perspective. I would like to introduce this report by acknowledging the excellent support and resilience of our clients, people and supply chain partners as we all continue to navigate our way through these challenging times. We are not alone; together we can help each other on this journey as we reflect and re-set.
This is our first report in alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Now the most widely used sustainability reporting tool, applied by 14,000+ businesses and governments, it provides us with a robust and trusted framework to share our ESG plans and progress.
As an independent consultancy, we have a unique opportunity to develop a global approach to ESG and drive responsible business practices throughout our ecosystem. Our strategy “Together for a sustainable future” recognizes the collaborative approach needed to make progress, as well as our contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Gleeds' Executive Management Board champions this agenda and we will report our impacts under the three headings:
The strategy is underpinned by a commitment to our talented people, our multicultural communities, supporting our clients’ sustainability goals throughout their project, while protecting the planet for future generations.
A key focus for 2021 is our commitment to reducing emissions. We have signed up to Science Based Targets and have gathered global data for scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Our roadmap will determine the direction we take – focusing on reduction and mitigation first and foremost, before considering gold-standard offsetting.
Social value is also in the spotlight as we look to achieve a positive impact for society through project performance. We believe in sharing our knowledge and skills to empower others to succeed; just as we acknowledge that the power of partnerships enables communities to thrive. We will increase our efforts in this area, making social value a consideration alongside the traditional metrics in our profession - of cost, time and quality.
Finally, these unprecedented times have coincided with a stronger voice from society for a more ethical future. Our moral compass at Gleeds, combined with 135+ years of strong relationships means that we remain as committed as ever to delivering a superior service to our clients while creating an inclusive and enjoyable environment for our people. Our increased emphasis on health and well-being will continue far beyond the pandemic. I would like to thank our people for their commitment to our clients and to one another; I am proud of their generous actions and commitments to a kinder, fairer, and more sustainable future.
