Introduction
As we come to the end of 2021, we reflect on how the construction industry has fared during the year. The COVID-19 virus has continued to present challenges such as impacts to site productivity and deliveries. As countries have tried to overcome the economic impacts of the pandemic and stimulate growth, materials issues have developed, with significant price escalation, reduced availability of materials and extended lead-in times presenting trials for the industry. Tendering activity has increased during the year and a strong demand for labour has been seen, highlighting the long-term issue of skills shortages.
Whilst there have been obvious challenges for the industry, there have also been positives, particularly with the collaboration of all parties involved — come rain or shine, the industry has proven its resilience.
We have produced reports each quarter tracking the construction industry and this report looks at key trends over the year.
"The pandemic was unknown and unforeseen, but the one thing it has done for the industry is bring all parties together to collaborate."
